Bug Report: Volume of iPhone Podcasts Should be Normalized

BrokenSnowGlobe will periodically feature product bugs that come up within the scope of using in our day-to-day lives

Description: Users listening to podcasts from different sources must adjusts the volume for each podcast. The volume should be normalized so that the volume does not change.

Severity: 3 (medium) (1 to 5 scale)

Priority: 3 (medium) (1 to 5 scale)

“Too loud, too quiet, too loud, too quiet, okay, too loud again…”

I was listening to the “CNN en Español” podcast a lot last year while practicing my spanish when I quickly discovered every story has a different volume depending on who and where it is produced. The problem also exists when you are listening to different podcasts in a playlist. Quite simply, I wanted to listen to my podcasts without having to adjust the volume for each new show. This was especially bad when the podcasts come from the same source, and it quickly got exhausting.

Given the prominence of the feature, I still find it mind boggling that Apple does not already have quality controls in place for normalizing the volumes. They have paved the road for podcasts as a medium and it really a frustrating defect to have to deal with especially when you want to listen to shorter format shows and literally have to adjust the volume every one or two minutes. Some competitors already offer this feature, but it seems like it really, really, really should be a default of Apple’s default podcasting app.
